On August 21, 2017, the Tri-State will experience a total solar eclipse. The Evansville Museum has planned numerous activities on Saturday and Sunday, August 19 and 20, which should be of interest to everyone interested in learning about and viewing one of nature’s most spectacular astronomical events. A bus excursion on Monday, August 21, will take viewers to a site to experience the eclipse in totality. There will be a viewing of the partial solar eclipse at the Museum from on Monday, August 21, from 11:00 am – 3:00 p.m.
Two full days of activities at the Museum are planned to teach people how to safely view, photograph and experience the eclipse. Special planetarium shows, the exhibition Eclipse 2017! in the Evansville Convention & Visitors Bureau Center for History & Science, workshops and astronomy presentations are designed to educate eclipse enthusiasts about this amazing event.
Saturday’s activities are geared to novice eclipse-watchers, families and students, while Sunday’s events will be tailored to appeal to amateur astronomers and other enthusiasts who are in town to witness the eclipse. Admission for each day includes general admittance to the Museum, a ticket to the Koch Immersive Theater and Planetarium, plus access to eclipse activities. Admission for Museum Members will be $5 for Adults and $3 for Youth and for Not-Yet-Members: $17 for Adults and $11 for Youth.
Excursions to Totality
The Museum has partnered with the City of Hopkinsville, Kentucky to offer two packaged tours for those wishing to experience the full 2 minutes and 39 seconds of the solar eclipse in totality.
Champagne Toast Eclipse Package
Leave the driving and parking to us for your trip to Hopkinsville, Kentucky to view the total solar eclipse at the James E. Bruce Convention Center. Included in the Champagne Toast Eclipse Package Tour are round-trip coach transportation to and from the eclipse site, complimentary eclipse glasses, catered lunch, access to indoor restrooms and an air conditioned hospitality room. Veteran eclipse chaser and the Museum’s Director of Science Experiences, Mitch Luman, will offer expert interpretation of the event on the ride to Hopkinsville. The Museum will provide a group telescope equipped with a solar filter equipped to view the partial phases before and after the eclipse. At the conclusion of the event, we will salute the Sun for its outstanding performance with a champagne toast. The bus departs Evansville at 8:00 a.m. and returns to the Museum at 4:30 p.m. CDT. The cost for the excursion is $125 for Museum Members and $150 for Not-Yet-Members.
What to Bring
It is suggested that participants bring a small folding chair, binoculars, camera, tripod or a small telescope. Hats and sunscreen are recommended accessories. Extremely large chairs, tents, canopies and pets cannot be accommodated due to limited cargo space on the bus. Bring your sense of wonder, your curiosity and hopes for clear, cloudless skies!
Drive and Park Eclipse Package
If you would prefer to drive your own vehicle to view the total solar eclipse, you are welcome join us at the James E. Bruce Convention Center in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. A map, directions, parking pass, suggested itinerary, complimentary eclipse glasses and a lunch are provided. Access to outdoor restrooms provided. A small telescope equipped with a solar filter will be on hand to view the partial phases of the eclipse. Tickets for this package (one vehicle per package) for Museum Members are $50 for the First Adult, $35 for the Second Adult and $35 for Youth. Not-Yet-Members are $75 for the First Adult, $50 for the Second Adult and $35 for Youth.

Abraham Lincoln historian William Bartelt will lead this trip to many sites in Illinois associated with the 16th president. Author of the 2008 book, There I Grew Up: Remembering Abraham Lincoln’s Indiana Youth and the 2012 article “Where He Grew Up—Indiana Lincoln Memorial”, Bartelt taught social studies at Evansville’s Harrison High School for 37 years and history at the University of Southern Indiana for 19 years. For over 15 summers, he was employed as a ranger and historian at Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial (two summers at Lincoln Home in Springfield). He was a member of the Federal Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission’s Advisory and Education Committees and served as vice-chair of the Indiana Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission.
