FRIENDS OF THE EVANSVILLE MUSEUM

Friends of the Evansville Museum is one of Evansville’s premier cultural support organizations. This dynamic group provides financial support for the museum through a variety of fundraising programs and cultivates future museum leadership by nurturing the next generation of art collectors and community leaders.

Members enjoy a full calendar of exciting social and educational events, including Museum exhibitions, lectures, day trips and fundraisers. These activities promote awareness of the museum as well as a broader understanding of contemporary art and culture.

THE EVANSVILLE MUSEUM DOCENT ASSOCIATION

Our Museum Docents provide guided tours of the museum’s permanent collections, special exhibitions and planetarium shows for school children, church groups and other guests. These specially trained, volunteer museum ambassadors help visitors better understand and enjoy their visit.

Docents enjoy the privilege of getting the “first look” at most temporary exhibitions. Travel opportunities are also available, as the Docent Association plans one or two educational trips each year to various museums and galleries. Our Docents receive ongoing training for changing exhibitions and permanent collections.

At Evansville Museum, Docents lead children and adults on educational adventures designed to complement the classroom experience and bring the museum to life. Enthusiastic individuals who are willing to volunteer their time are always needed for our continuing efforts to enhance museum education.

Training for new Docents begins in August. Anyone interested in becoming a Docent is welcome to follow a tour and see first-hand how Docents educate their groups. To arrange this experience or for more information, please call (812) 425-2406, ext. 226.

THE EVANSVILLE MUSEUM STUDENT EXPLAINER PROGRAM

The Student Explainer program began during the summer of 1986 when one dozen high school students were selected to begin training in an effort to assist with work being done in the science galleries and the planetarium.

The program provides public service opportunities for are students in grades 7-12 to assist in providing public science demonstrations and to assist Museum staff in carrying out the mission of the Museum. Our program is modeled on the exhibit explainer concept in use for many years at the Exploratorium, a world-renowned science museum in San Francisco, California.

Student Explainers undergo an initial training period tofamiliarize themselves with the Museum’s operations and receive instruction on how to perform some pretty amazing science demonstrations. Volunteer hours take place on weekends and on weekdays during summer break. Interested individuals can apply to the program by completing a Registration Form.
